A raccoon broke into a closed liquor store in Ashland, Virginia, overnight, stealing a selection of whisky and scotch, only to be discovered the next morning in a state of intoxication.
On Saturday, staff members arriving at the Virginia ABC store were met with a scene of disarray: broken bottles scattered across the floor, a ceiling tile that had collapsed, and puddles of spilled alcohol. The unexpected intruder was identified as a raccoon, which had managed to infiltrate the store by leaping through a ceiling tile and targeting the bottom shelf where various spirits were stored. Security footage captured the animal knocking over several bottles, including rum and whisky, before it appeared to sample the contents.
By the morning, the raccoon was found unconscious beside the toilet in the store's bathroom, clearly affected by the alcohol it had consumed. Officers from the Hanover County Animal Protection and Shelter were summoned to the scene and safely transported the raccoon to a shelter for recovery. One officer noted the raccoon's escapade, suggesting that it had engaged in a "full-blown rampage" during its visit.
The incident resulted in damage to the store, with fourteen bottles shattered, leading to an estimated retail loss of around $250. Aside from the broken spirits and minor ceiling damage, no significant structural issues were reported.
This unusual occurrence highlights a trend of wildlife adapting to urban settings and taking advantage of human infrastructure. Experts have observed that raccoons, due to their agility and curiosity, are increasingly coming into contact with human environments, often resulting in chaotic situations.
Public reactions to images of the scene, featuring liquor-stained aisles and the sprawled raccoon, ranged from amusement to bemusement, with many referring to the animal as a "masked bandit." The animal-control agency also commented humorously, expressing hope that the raccoon had learned a valuable lesson about the consequences of breaking and entering.
