Riyadh is preparing to initiate a significant transformation of the terminal at King Khalid International Airport (KKIA) in the first quarter of 2026, aimed at enhancing its capacity. This announcement coincides with the rapid development of the Saudi capital and reflects the strategic positioning of its aviation sector for substantial growth. The initiative represents one of the most extensive development projects undertaken at KKIA, aligning with the Riyadh Airports Company’s (RAC) vision for the future of airports in Saudi Arabia.
A key aspect of this transformation involves the reorganization of operations within KKIA’s existing terminals, which have seen design changes since the airport's inception over four decades ago. The updated operational framework will designate Terminal 5 for international flights operated by foreign airlines, while Terminals 3 and 4 will cater to domestic flights. Terminals 1 and 2 will continue to facilitate international flights operated by national carriers.
The reorganization is anticipated to enhance terminal capacity, streamline passenger movement between terminals, and reduce waiting times between flights, thereby improving the overall experience for travelers. The specific date for the activation of these changes will be confirmed once all relevant airport sectors and airlines complete their operational readiness assessments.
Riyadh Airports Company, in collaboration with the General Authority of Civil Aviation and MATARAT Holding, emphasized that this transformation is part of a larger strategy focused on improving passenger experiences, boosting operational efficiency, and elevating service quality at KKIA. This plan is also in line with national aviation goals, reinforcing Saudi Arabia's leadership in the regional and international aviation sectors. Furthermore, it supports the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030 by advancing air transport infrastructure and solidifying the Kingdom’s status as a global logistics hub connecting three continents through state-of-the-art airport facilities.
Recent statistics from the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) indicate that Saudi Arabia's aviation sector has reached new heights, with over 103.1 million passengers traveling through the Kingdom’s airports and a total of 713,000 flight movements recorded between January and September 2025.
