DP World, in collaboration with Thames Freeport, has commenced construction on The Hive, a logistics and innovation hub valued at GBP 13 million (approximately US$17.4 million) within the London Gateway Logistics Park. This initiative is part of Thames Freeport's broader strategy to enhance skills, foster innovation, and create opportunities in the Thames Estuary region.
The Hive will encompass 29,000 square feet and is designed to serve as a central resource for local businesses, offering flexible meeting spaces, a dedicated training and innovation skills center, as well as recreational facilities including a state-of-the-art gym and two sports pitches. Additionally, food and beverage services will be available on-site.
This investment is expected to significantly benefit the local community, providing over 100 days of industrial and employability skills programs annually, which will support approximately 1,125 trainees each year across the Freeport. This project represents the latest partnership between DP World and Thames Freeport, aimed at fostering a collaborative environment for economic growth.
Thames Freeport has been co-funded to develop shared infrastructure that promotes skills and innovation across the three council areas of Barking & Dagenham, Havering, and Thurrock. The Hive is anticipated to play a crucial role in this joint venture, contributing to long-term positive impacts within the community.
Construction of The Hive began in October 2023 and is projected to be completed by March 2026. The facility, being built by Goldbeck Construction, is expected to achieve an ‘A+’ EPC Rating and ‘Outstanding’ BREEAM certification, reflecting its commitment to sustainability and efficiency.
The Hive will be strategically located at the center of London Gateway’s expansive 9.25 million square feet Logistics Park, of which half has already been developed. This growth aligns with the ongoing GBP 1 billion (US$1.34 billion) expansion of the adjacent port and rail terminals, which includes the construction of two new all-electric berths and a second rail terminal. This expansion supports DP World’s vision of establishing London Gateway as the largest throughput container port in the UK.
